"This is one of Dénia’s old neighbourhoods, which arose between the castle walls and the port. It is a very picturesque area: the buildings, squares and alleys are a pleasant surprise due to their Mediterranean style.
It has low-rise houses, charming squares and wonderful nooks, such as the squares of Sant Antoni and La Creu; in the latter, the stone cross that gives the square its name and a devotional panel from the 18th century attract the visitor’s attention.
Between the two squares, there is a life-size bronze statue representing a Playmobil figure, as a homage to the 50th anniversary of the filming of El capità Jones in the city.
The streets, reserved mainly for pedestrians, and the seafront walking area opposite the harbour create opportunities for pleasant promenades with plenty of terraces and many gastronomic offers.
This part of Dénia has always been linked to the sea, and the connection is still visible. Until the 1970s, sailors and fishermen lived here, surrounded by warehouses and the hubbub of maritime trade.
The buildings and the current urban image of the Baix La Mar neighbourhood originated in the 19th century. However, part of the location had already been occupied by the Arabs under the name of raval de la mar or raval marítim (sea borough). During Islamic times there were four neighbourhoods but the maritime one was, probably, the most important of the three located next to the sea, as it was directly linked to the harbour.” (1)
