Teulada Moraira
The Sant Vicent Ferrer Chapel is located at the exit of the municipality called Teulada when heading towards Benissa. Tradition has it that where the chapel stands today is where Sant Vicent bade farewell to the local inhabitants on the 20th of August, 1410.
The chapel was built on the site of its predecessor, and after several years of work, it was solemnly blessed on the 29th of March, 1797. The chapel has undergone several alterations, refurbishments and extensions, but also losses, such as the demolition of the hermit's house.
The exterior of the chapel has whitewashed masonry walls reinforced by buttresses and exposed stone ashlars. It has a triple-sided tiled roof, on top of which stands an octagonal drum crowned by the cupola. Above the door, there is a window which illuminates the interior of the choir and there is also a small oculus. On top of these, there is a mixtilinear ornamental cornice, in the centre of which rises the belfry housing the bell.
To the right of the door is a colourful ceramic tableau depicting an image of the saint made in 1998, framed between pilasters and a triangular pediment. On the left side, another tile panel informs us about the founding of the chapel and its most important restorations.
The neoclassical interior has three naves, a transept and a presbytery. Most of the roof is barrel-vaulted except in the side chapels, one of which is dedicated to Santa Catalina, which have connecting vaulted ceilings. At the intersection of the transept and the nave rises the hemispherical dome supported upon pendentives.
The front wall presents a beautiful altarpiece depicting Sant Vicent, a most splendid work dating from the Valencian school of the 16th century. In the past, a ceramic tableau known as Retaule de Les Ànimes was also kept in this chapel; an anonymous work from the 15th century that represents L'Adoració dels Reis (The Adoration of the Kings) and one of the most important pieces of Valencian mediaeval artistic heritage. It is currently kept in the parish church.
