"In this square, located in the municipality of La Xara, one can find a monumental carob tree. This large tree (Ceratonia siliqua) has a short trunk, split in the middle and divided into two main branches with almost horizontal growth. Its height is 8.5 metres, and it is estimated to be between 300 and 400 years old. It grew among dryland crops close to the settlement. With the expansion of the urban centre, it has become the central protagonist of a square that bears its name.
It is no coincidence that a tree like the carob is found in this area, given that it is a tree native to the Mediterranean region and cultivated in warm climates, since it resists drought and does not need much water to grow or live. Spain is the main country where it is grown, and it is very beneficial for several reasons: it protects the soil and, in addition, due to the fact that it is a xerophilic species, its use is indicated for reforesting areas such as coasts that may be threatened by erosion or drought.” (1)
