Inside the school one finds a large stone monument, the history of Benissa and Senija being marked by this material. At the foot of the stone there is an inscription which says “pedra salve”. In those days, when the roads were not yet asphalted, twice a year the Senigers and Benissers would travel to the lands of La Ribera to work in the sowing or harvesting of rice. Along the road known as Camí Vell de València they would have come across this stone, it being a natural landmark from where they could say goodbye to their villages. The groups would march together and, as an emotional farewell before starting their journey, they would pray to La Mare de Déu dels Desemparats in front of the stone. These workers were known as Riberers.(1)
