The Speleology Section of the CE d'Alcoi explored Avenc Ample (the Ample chasm) for the first time on November 16th, 1952, with speleologist G. Pla at the helm. He was the first to touch its base and draw a topographic sketch of the cavity. Some time before that, a person looking for exotic plants had had an accident and fallen to the bottom of the chasm. A rescue team had then been sent to go down to his rescue and eventually raise his corpse. Currently, there is no more data available about this episode.
On January 17th, 1981, R. Pla of CE d'Alcoi made the topographic study which got published and in it he establishes 60 metres as the maximum depth of the chasm. During recent years, groups from Alicante and Valencia have used it as a classroom for speleological sports training.
At the beginning of 2001, the speleology group of the CE de Gandia discovered a passage to a large unknown room.
From the road from Pego to Ebo and at about kilometre 8.4, in the UTM coordinates 4300175N 749133E, take a mountain path that leads to the Ample, Estret and d'Enmig chasms, continuing towards a mountain refuge. At the coordinates 4300159N 748881E is the Ample chasm, located five metres to the left of the path. About 15 metres ahead there is a good spot to park a vehicle.
The topography is very simple, being a vertical well with a depth of 48 to 54 metres, depending on the point at which the vertical measurement is taken. Its diameter is about 20 to 30 metres, depending on the depth, forming at its base a large rubble cone almost 15 metres high. The cone occupies the entire base of the chasm, the surface of which reaches an area of 40 x 30 metres.
The peak of the cone is located to the north of the floor at 45 metres, while the deepest base is to the west, where a nook presents a series of aged concretions. From the east one can climb to a ledge that is about 12 metres high. To the east and at a height of about 20 metres, there is a hole originating from a lateral chasm, the vertical of which does not exceed 40 metres. It is located in the deepest part of the cavern complex, with large dimensions for a comfortable descent.(1)
