The old Town Hall building was built in 1925 and restored in 2005, when it became the Social Centre. It is located on the corner between the street called Carrer Major and the square known as Plaça de l’Ajuntament, in the very centre of the municipality.
The old Town Hall is an example of the civil architecture of the first half of the 20th century, like the so-called Old Schools which were built in 1931. The building, along with many others from the same period in the area, is linked to Lluís Santonja, who was the promoter and constructor of the structures.
In the specific case of the Town Hall, it is necessary to highlight also the name of Valeriano Jiménez de la Iglesia, an engineer who was Lluís' son-in-law. During the Civil War, both were declared enemies of the regime by the Second Republic and, once the Francoists won the war, Valeriano —who had in the meantime become a Captain in the Engineers of Franco’s army— occupied the Town Hall on the 29th of March in 1939, expelling the republican authorities.
The facade, with its neoclassical style, stands out for its symmetry and bright colours. On the first floor there is a balustrade and windows with lintels decorated with symmetrical motifs and, above, some decorations with plant-themed garlands. The building is topped by a decorated circular pediment below which “year 1925” is written and, further down and with current typography, the words “Social Centre”.
