The cove called Cala del Portitxol, also known as Cala de La Barraca, is one of those beach spots that amazes everyone. It is not a classic beach with fine sand and a large expanse but is rather composed of gravel and rocks, with an average width of only eight metres and a length of a few hundred metres. Located between Cap Prim and Cap Negre in the province of Alicante, it belongs to the municipality of Xàbia and is surrounded by a lush Mediterranean forest typical of the area. To reach the Portitxol cove by vehicle, it is necessary to drive about eight kilometres on the Cap de La Nau road until a turnoff that leads to a small parking area. It is also accessible on foot from the Creu del Portitxol viewpoint.
Around the Portitxol cove, there are four viewpoints worth visiting: Creu del Portitxol, Illa, Falzia, and Cap Negre. There is a hiking trail that connects these four viewpoints, which can be easily traversed. Afterwards, one can descend to the beach for a refreshing swim, to relax for a while, or to engage in sports activities.
The island known as Illa del Portitxol is visible from almost any point and dominates the landscape with its 300-metre height. The waters are highly sought after by diving enthusiasts due to the rocky seabed rich in Posidonia seagrass meadows and an interesting variety of marine fauna. The characteristics of this area contribute to the presence of vegetation of great botanical interest, as demonstrated by the two existing plant microreserves in the Portitxol bay.
