The hermitage of Pare Pere is located about two and a half kilometres south of the town, on the slopes of El Montgó, at number 30 of the road called Camí de La Cova de L'Aigua. A statue of Pare Pere indicates where the entrance is. It is possible to get there from the chapel known as Ermita de Sant Joan, about 500 metres away, along the road known as Assagador de Santa Llúcia.
Venerated as a saint, Friar Pere Esteve, known as Pare Pere, is the most relevant figure in popular devotion in Dénia. He was the promoter of the devotion to La Santíssima Sang, the origin of the patron saint festivities of Dénia.
He joined the Franciscan order when he was 18 years old, feeling a strong religious calling. Motivated by a powerful evangelical vocation and by a rigid principle of eremitic austerity, he preached for many years throughout the region. He is credited with numerous miraculous acts, inexplicable healings and the ability to predict the future.
This venerable friar retired as a hermit to a refuge on one of the slopes of El Montgó, where it seems he stayed for a long time and which has become a devotional centre for pilgrims and visitors.
Friar Pere Esteve died in Valencia at the age of 76 on the 3rd of November, 1658. His remains lie in the presbytery of the parish church of the Assumption of Dénia.
The hermitage of Pare Pere is a small rectangular hut filled with offerings, built using pumice and masonry blocks. A gabled roof was added with, on one of the sides, a narrow rectangular opening. It has as its only ornaments a wrought-iron cross and a lantern made using the same metal. In front, it is possible to see a clay image of Pare Pere riding an ass.
