The stones here speak, because they are a part
of our past and a part of our present.
El Verger
The so-called Riurau dels Guillem is located in the area of Buscarrons, in the locality of El Verger. It was built between 1820 and 1830 and, like all the “riuraus” in this municipality (which were typical constructions used as a shelter for raisin production in case of bad weather), it has the peculiarity of having an attached dwelling. The construction itself has a gable roof.
On one side are the five flattened arches of the “riurau”, which lead to an esplanade that used to be the area where the grapes were dried to make raisins, and on the other side is the house, attached to the “riurau”.
This architectural solution is unique since most of these raisin warehouses, typical of La Marina Alta, are usually separate buildings.
Oddly, it is oriented towards the northwest, while typically they are oriented towards the south. The walls are made of stone masonry with earth and lime mortar, and the pumice stone arcades are joined with pebble masonry from the River Girona.
Currently, the local Town Hall has in mind a project to save the “riurau” from collapsing, as it is one of the oldest in La Marina Alta.
