The social centre of the old agricultural cooperative is one of the buildings in Benigembla that attracts the most amount of attention (1). Neoclassical in style, it integrates elements of Rococo and the French Baroque. It was designed by the architect Adelí Moll, who was born in Benigembla, and it was built at the beginning of the 20th century.
One of the characteristics of the Spanish Civil War was the collectivisation of all economic sectors, including agriculture. It was these collectivities dependent on the unions that, together with the cooperatives, directed the economic life in each town or village. After the vineyard crisis of the 1930s, La Marina Alta underwent a total agricultural transformation, moving away from being an area of rain-fed agriculture to one based on irrigation, with oranges as the main crop. It was within this context that the existence of the Union, as an agricultural cooperative, best served the interests of the local population.
The building belonged to the members of the Sant Francesc Xavier agricultural cooperative until 2005, when the Town Hall of Benigembla bought the premises with the intention of renovating them. In 2010, the renovation and expansion works began. Currently, it houses the socio-cultural centre and various types of events and festivities are held there, such as the Saint Antoni festivity during the month of January.
