The typical rural dwelling of Xaló is that of the country house with riurau and naia adjoined. The riurau is a portico structure of semi-circular arches attached to the side of the house, although there do exist riuraus that are separate. The number of arches is generally odd and they are usually south facing. Historically, it was used to store raisins on rainy days. The naia, in addition to protecting the house from the sun and rain, also serves an obvious aesthetic function. In front of the naia there is an area of uncultivated land known as the sequer, the soil hardened from being trod on, where reeds full of grapes would stretch out in rows, drying into raisins by the heat of the sun.
