La Vall de Gallinera
Benirrama’s rock paintings were discovered in 1977 by members of the Centre d'Estudis Contestans, which studied the art they found and published works about it. The cave shelter is open towards the southeast, at the foot of the Serra de l’Almirant and located a few metres away from the Gallinera River. Currently it is possible to do self-guided tours.
In the shelter of Benirrama there are two styles of rock art, schematic art and Levantine art. Rock art was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. Being a part of the world's heritage means that, in addition to recognising its universal relevance as an exceptional cultural expression, there is a great duty to preserve these sites which are terribly fragile and vulnerable, in order to be able to pass them on to future generations in the best possible conditions.
To visit the shelter, it is necessary to leave Benirrama along the cobbled path (Camí d’Ebo), in the direction which goes towards the main road. The trail crosses the road and goes down to the river bed, crossing it and then going to the right, passing just above the horse farm and through a grove of pine trees. Further on, the trail crosses the mountain track that goes up to La Llacuna and, heading east, passes by a livestock pen and eventually reaches an oak grove after a very gentle walk and with the river always on the right. From there the trail climbs up a hill, leading to a path on the left that goes up to the rock shelter, leaving behind on the right the pen known as Corral del Vidre.
After visiting the shelter and enjoying the rock paintings and seeing the terrible destruction caused by the plunder of 1993, the trail goes back to Benirrama by way of the springs of La Mata and Benimarsoc. This part of the trail passes by the aforementioned Corral del Vidre, crosses the river and then the road. On the other side, the Route of the 8 Villages begins and a little more than a kilometre away lies the village of Benirrama, but, before getting there, along the way it is possible to cool off at La Mata or Benimarsoc springs.
