This route is a visit to the two 19th century windmills that are located in the municipality of Gata de Gorgos. They are positioned on a hill at the entrance to the village and they can be reached by way of a new path created for that purpose. These mills were used by the residents of the village to grind grain and obtain flour.
Windmills are the most important architectural remains of the traditional heritage of the Marina Alta region. These constructions were between 7 and 8 metres high and were used to grind cereals, but also as a place to store the grain.
According to manorial laws, the grinding of cereals was a monopoly that belonged to the feudal lord, in this case the Marquis of Dénia, and the mills operated until the end of the 19th century. As a result of the boom in the production of raisins, the emergence of other energy systems and the reduction in wheat cultivation in the region, the mills were abandoned.
