Ermita de Sant Francesc o ermita vella d'Oltà
The Chapel of Sant Francesc, also known as the Old Chapel of Oltà (Ermita Vella d’Oltà), is situated in the Oltà mountain range, at an elevation of 333 metres and about three kilometres northwest of the urban centre of Calp.
This place of worship is referred to as the Old Chapel because it was built upon the remains of the ancient hermitage after the latter became mere ruins.
Its floor plan is rectangular, with pointed and open glazed windows on its side walls, and a rounded apse, also with windows, which is quite prominent towards the exterior.
The entrance door to the chapel is made of wood, and its key bears the engraving "2002", which is the year of the chapel’s inauguration. There is a stone slab in the centre of the pediment with the name of the chapel chiselled in relief, and a bell gable rises above the pinnacle with a bell that was cast in the mid-18th century.
The interior, clean and well-lit, has a beamed barrel vault ceiling, ceramic flooring, and a painted base that runs along the walls. The nave is divided into two sections by two semi-circular arches.
The sanctuary is elevated on a platform and is adorned with paintings of trees and a starry sky. At the head, on a pedestal, stands a modern image of Saint Francis of Assisi, accompanied by the following inscription: La plenitud no s'aconsegueix perseguint el que s'anhela, sinó gaudint el que tens. [Fulfilment is not achieved by pursuing what is yearned for, but by enjoying what you have.]
