La Vall de Laguar

Les Juvees de Laguar

"Les Juvees are a type of dispersed rural habitat located in the municipality of La Vall de Laguar, in La Marina Alta, and dedicated mainly to the farming of olives, almonds, figs and cereals. They are located in the ravine known as Barranc de L’Infern. It is necessary to distinguish between Les Juvees de Dalt and Les Juvees d'Enmig.

The toponym of Les Juvees refers to old country houses that were historically used as a home during harvest time. The houses were simple, made of stone walls, ceilings of wooden beams and reeds, and roofs of clay tiles. Inside was a space for storing products, an area for the donkey or mule and above this, a room that served as a bedroom for the farmer.

The word jovada or juvees has its origin in the extent of land that a pair of oxen could plough in a single day and, although it was an agrarian measure used for the distribution of land during the repopulation in the Reconquest, the use dates back to Roman times.

The municipality of La Vall de Laguar had, until the middle of the 20th century, a trail network for horses and other animals. The trails were narrow and only allowed the passage of the animal with its load. It was adapted to the morphology of the terrain. To overcome the pronounced unevenness, a kind of stone crossbeams or racks were built. The maintenance of these roads was done by a type of shifts system, called sistema de tandes, which for the farmers meant working a number of days a year for free, in proportion to the cultivated surface of their property.

Currently, some horseshoe paths remain in their original layout and location, one of which is the access to Les Juvees.” (1)
