To understand the botanical park project and the seed of its subsequent construction, one must go back to the 20th century, within the context of the historical floods of the River Xaló-Gorgos.
The region of La Marina Alta is located in one of the most important rainfall centres in the whole of the area of Valencia, which has led to numerous floods throughout the 20th century and with the River Xaló-Gorgos as one of the undisputed protagonists. Specifically, in October of 1957, there was a big flood that motivated the construction of the containment and protection wall on the banks of the river at its passage through Benigembla. The main benefactor of the construction of the wall of El Ribàs was Baldomero Vega de Seoane, a representative in the Provincial Council of Alacant of the party of José Canalejas.
This wall, made of hewn stone, has been a symbol of the town since it was built. So much so that it is even part of its coat of arms: the emblem of Benigembla shows some waves of the River Gorgos hitting the wall of El Ribàs.
Currently, the project of creating a botanical park mostly made up of deciduous forest species is underway, with the aim of recovering the surrounding environment.
