The route begins in the port of Xàbia, from the eastern dock. The first section of the path leads you through the ravine known as Barranc del Tangó to the lighthouse.

Walk following the markers until the recreational area of Plana de Sant Jeroni. From here, continue along the path of the ravine to the sanctuary, where there is an information panel of the entire PR route. Furthermore, if you prefer to do the shorter route, this is where the Molins variant starts, which leads you back to the port of Xàbia, passing through Molins de la Plana. The sanctuary is also a good place to do the Cova Tallada route, since you can leave the car there and do only this section of the route.

Once at the sanctuary, turn right to continue along the road for about 300 metres, until the Plana de Sant Jeroni path.

Take this road, following the PR marks, until the road becomes a path. After a few metres there are signs that indicate the cave which is known as Cova Tallada. Turn right and head along a beautiful path towards the cave's ravine.

Once inside the ravine, the path takes you down quickly and, at the narrowest part, there is a stone step that you can easily overcome with the help of the chains which have been installed to help you. Once past this point, the path leads you directly to Cova Tallada. From the sanctuary, this stretch is only about 2 km long and it is a nice way to get to this magnificent cave.

After passing by the cave, the PR route continues towards Torre del Gerro. From this point, take a path (indicated by the trail sign) and do not abandon it until you reach some houses in ruins.

Next to the houses there is a path that takes you to a crossroads, from where you have to take the path on the right that leads you the Cap de Sant Antoni road. When you reach the road, turn right and continue walking for about a hundred metres, following the trail markings, so as to reach the road that goes from Xàbia to Dénia and be able to cross it to get to a path that goes through a small pine forest.

This path takes you to the first firebreak where you have to turn right. About 200 metres further on, the route leaves the firebreak and you have to take a path on the left that goes into another small pine forest. This path takes you to the main firebreak and, when you reach it, you have to turn left. A few metres further on, go past a barrier that prevents vehicles from going any further and there you can see an information panel regarding the PR route, for those who do not want to do the whole trail and just want to climb Montgó. It is a good option to start from here, since nearby there is a car park where you can leave your car.

From this information panel you can reach the summit of Montgó by walking a distance of just under 4 km.

Leave the information panel behind you and continue along the track for about 500 metres and then take a track on the right. Continue along this path and a little further on it splits into two. Do not take the path on the left and instead continue straight on for a hundred metres until this track ends and the path to climb Montgó begins.

During the first two kilometres, this path is surrounded by sharp slopes and it zigzags a lot so as to make it easier to ascend. Upon reaching the so-called Balcó del Montgó, the path ends and an easy and wide ridge begins that takes you to the summit of Montgó, from where you can enjoy impressive views of the entire Marina Alta region.
